Traditional Rummy

The Rummy games traditional variation may be not as popular as Rummy’s variations Kalooki, Oklahoma and the Gin Rummy, but many players who know the rules of this game, love to play it. This game is played in European countries and many players play it online and at the home. This game’s play is similar to all card games. A player can win the game by laying of all his consecutive cards as soon as possible. In this game you may lay off your cards at any time. There is no such rule regarding when to lay off the cards, you may lay off at any time whenever you fulfill the criteria of game.

Traditional Rummy is also known as Standard Rummy, Basic Rummy, Regular Rummy, Rummy or Rummy and this is known to be the most played card game. This is not a very simple game; this requires excellent memory and good strategy to play the game. If you are playing the game 1st time then you should watch carefully your opponent’s draws and discards. A beginner should also always remember one thing that he has to dispose all the cards as quickly as possible before his opponents. Drawing and discarding the right cards eventually forms the sets or runs of the consecutive cards of the same rank or suit.

Game Objective
The objective of the game is very simple. To win the turn or game you have to meld all cards in runs or sets of the consecutive cards. The main aim is to dispose all your cards on the centre of the table before your opponents do. To dispose the cards a player has to make meld of 3 or 4 cards of the same suit or rank in a sequence. A player can dispose cards in three ways and these are laying off, melding and discarding. The cards which are not used in any meld are known as deadwood. If the deadwood counts are less than or equal to 10 and a player has created a meld of 3 or 4 cards then he may lay off the cards on the centre of the table.

Dealing
A dealer is selected randomly to deal the cards to each player. If the game is between two players then either you or your opponent can deal the cards first and then after each turn, the looser or winner may deal. At a time, each player gets ten cards. If players are three or more than then 7 cards are dealt to each player. These cards are placed face down. After dealing cards to each player the 21st card are placed in the middle of the desk. This card is known as upcard. This card is the first card of the discard pile. Then the left out cards are placed next to the discard pile to form the stock pile. The discard pile’s cards are placed face up while the stock pile’s cards are placed face up.

Play
The rules of Traditional Rummy are almost same as Gin Rummy. In the game, you have standard 52 cards deck, and to win the game you have to meld first. To play game, you have to draw card either from the top of the stock pile or from the top of the discard pile. You can meld your cards into runs or sets of the consecutive cards from the rank or from the suit. As soon as you make meld you should lay off the cards on the center of the table. Then you should discard your unmatched cards which are called deadwood cards. Scores are calculated in the game as follow: Ace card is 11 points, 2 to 10 cards are as their nominal value and all face cards are 10 points. If you win the Rummy all other players will incur 25 points as penalty.

Playing Traditional Rummy is not as easy as any other card game. A player can play this game head to head, with two or with three players. But, to win this complex game you have to be technically most skilled player.
