Gin History
The game Gin Rummy or Gin has been derived in
nineteenth century. This is popular among families, gamblers and
people of all age group love to play this game. If we study Gin
History we will come to know that as with any history, many thoughts
are also written about to its origin. A brief description on Gin
Rummy’s origin is written here.
In the late 19th century, a game Poker was a favorite
game of the people. It is believed that Rummy is derived from Poker.
Poker was played not only in Casinos but also in saloons, home and
any other gathering places. Both the games are similar in rules.
Poker is also known as ‘Whiskey Poker’. As for the name ‘Whiskey
Poker’, it is believed that this is named for the reason because
this game was played to get alcoholic drinks. Many card games were
played in saloons, casinos etc where Gin an alcoholic drink was also
drunk, the drink Gin is also known as Rum and so the game Rummy is
called Rummy. Since, winner of the game was offered drink as a prize
of the game and so the name of the games were adapting and changing
accordingly. According to other analysis it is supposed
that the Mexican game ‘Conquian’ would have been the origin of
family card game of Rummy. Some credit is also given to Elwood Baker
of Whist Club in New York. He was a card game Bridge Tutor so it is
believed he was the founder of the game Gin Rummy. Only in 1930s the
game Gin Rummy became very fascinating among the American citizens
and this game was not only played by common people but also
celebrities loved to play the game gin rummy. In the Gin
History, it is also studied that this game might have been derived
from Chinese theory. It is assumed that the “Chinese Theory” is the
first theory about the origin of Rummy. And according to this, Rummy
is derived from the Chinese game Mahjong. Since Mahjong game is also
played by drawing and discarding cards and this game is of 18th
century.
In British "Rum" is used for odd or unusual or curious, could be the
first opinion for the Rummy game’s technicalities. The
adaptability of the game is also due to the fact that the rules of
the game are very easy to learn and this game is inexpensive as
well. On the contrary, this game is much played on the game sites
for the money purposes so it is also famous for gambling.
But still the real facts are not known in the Gin History about the
origin of Gin Rummy. Perhaps one day we will know the real
origination of Rummy. Usually 2 to 8 players can play this game.
Standard 52 cards deck is used in the game. All cards are divided in
some suites and cards of each suite are ranked from low to high like
A 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 J Q K where A is for Ace, K is for King, J is
for Jack and Q is for Queen.
Objective of the Game Rummy
To win the game Gin Rummy, the objective of each player is to earn
more points than his/her opponents. The game’s main strategy is to
form melds with minimum deadwood counts. Melds can be formed by two
types:

Sets of three or four cards in the consecutive order
from the same rank like JJJJ.

Runs of three or four cards in progression, of the same
suit like, 4567.
The remaining cards which are not used in forming melds are called
deadwood cards and the sum of all these cards are known as deadwood
counts. The deadwood counts of a player should be less than or equal
to 10 to lay off the cards on the table.
Game play
The game play is that a player in each turn:

Draws cards either from the top of the discard pile or
from the top of the stock pile. Cards are placed face up in the
discard pile and face down in the stock pile.

Under certain conditions a player may "knock", to end
the turn

After discarding or drawing, a player has to discard 1
card on to the discard pile, but the same card is not allowed which
he has either drawn or discarded.
Play continues, in alternating turns, until one player
knocks or only 2 cards remain in the stock pile. In that case, the
hand would end in a draw.
Variations of the Gin Rummy game
Since Gin Rummy can be played with many variations so Gin Rummy has
many variations and these are Oklahoma, Hollywood Gin and Michigan
Rummy etc.
